- Defining Vastu
- Tips To Improve Vastu
As a realtor, brushing up on your real estate vocabulary can go a long way when talking to potential clients. One such term used more commonly by Indian expats looking for property in the UAE is “Vastu”.
But what is Vastu, and why do property seekers look for Vastu-compliant homes? Let’s delve into the basics of Vastu that every realtor in the UAE should know. We also share some tips you can share with your clients on improving the Vastu of their homes.
What Is Vastu?
Commonly referred to as “the Art of Life”, Vastu is an Indian study of architecture. Dating to centuries ago, it offers guidelines on designing the house to enhance luck, prosperity and happiness for the residents.
Vastu is very similar to feng-shui, as it places weightage on the directions of the rooms and placements of objects in the house. Although there are many advanced elements to keep in mind when optimising the Vastu of your home, the basics are pretty easy to keep in mind.
The Entrance
According to Vastu, the direction a house’s entrance faces is considered sacred, as this is how prosperity is supposed to ‘enter’. Entrances facing the East, West, North-East and North-West are known to usher luck to the residents, while houses facing the South are considered inauspicious.
The next time you come across a house with the right entrance placement, don’t forget to mention it to your clients.
The Kitchen
Balancing the five elements of nature is the crux of having a Vastu-compliant house. Since the kitchen is associated with ‘fire’, it should align with the rest of the house, at the South-East corner.
The slab where the cooking happens (i.e., that with the stove) should ideally face the East.
The Bedrooms
A Vastu-compliant house would have its bedrooms face the South-West, South or West direction. Children’s bedrooms should face the West, avoiding the East or South East.
The bedroom’s placement is connected to bringing prosperity and happiness.
The Restrooms
Like the kitchen embodies the fire element, the restrooms represent water. Flowing water represents good luck, according to Vastu, which is why apartments with water leakages must be fixed immediately.
Having your restroom at the South or South-West corner is ideal for a Vastu-compliant house.
Tips To Improve Vastu In Your Home
You can also improve your house’s Vastu by planning its decor. Some of them include:
- Having a bamboo plant in your house is believed to invite prosperity. “Lucky bamboo”, or a bamboo stick, is also associated with luck in feng shui
- Paintings of flowing water are supposed to symbolise prosperity flowing into your life. Pictures or figurines of elephants are also supposed to usher in positivity
- Burn incense or use room freshener to keep your home smelling great. Unpleasant smells are supposed to bring bad luck, so maybe spraying in the fragrance can be good after a night of cooking
- A clutter-free home is essential to improving the flow of good luck to the house’s residents. Consistent cleaning, decluttering and getting rid of unwanted items are essential
- Let fresh air into your bedroom for at least 20 minutes a day, along with natural light.
Knowing the basics of Vastu can help when meeting clients who bring this up. As a realtor, it is essential to brush up on concerns and topics that can be bought up to avoid saying “I don’t know”.
